This picture was made in Dominican Republic back in November of 2011. I was with an old friend's family visiting and touring a small town. With the family I was with there were two children, this child above and his sister. I decided to take this photo in this particular spot because the lighting was the best. I used my Canon 7D with my 50mm (F1.8) lens and it came out great. I spent a lot of time that day trying to find the best lighting, and at this time with the sun bouncing off of a building behind me gave a nice soft light. Now i'm not going to talk like I'm one of those big hefty professionals because I can't talk that way at all. I'm a simple, poetic man who takes these pictures and is partially amazed by them. Not saying that I can't produce great photos with any awareness but I love my work. When I edited this I used photoshop along with a iPad app called Luminance. I tried several different looks but the black and white came out the best.
I love this picture because I believe I captured the true innocence of this child. He was the shy type and I had been using his sister for majority of the day and he finally felt as though he was getting some attention. His skin, the light, the feel was all captured in this photo and I fell extremely connected with it. There are others of him I have that are also visually stunning, but this one grabs my heart.
